For the Parents & Guardians
Many parents have the misconception that children and dogs get along like...
well like Timmy and Lassie. The assumption that dogs and kids are natural buddies can be very dangerous. It takes a lot of training on behalf of the child and the dog to try and ensure they can live harmoniously. Even the best trained dog and child can have bad days and forget training for some reason (not feeling well, stressed, over tired, aging dogs may have more aches and pains, angry child may wish to lash out, mother dog protecting puppies, etc.). Adult supervision of dogs and kids is a must - no matter the age of the child. However, younger children and infants must be watched far more closely than a well-behaved older teen who has a better understanding of dogs and proper behavior around the family pet as well as general dog safety.
How safe is your child with dogs?
First, I would like you to go to the Kids Section of this CD and take the two tests.
It will give you an understanding about dog and child safety from a kid's standpoint. If you have a preschooler or toddler, please read the For the Little Ones section with your youngster (lots of pictures!)
Second, continue on to the Child/Dog Safety - For The Adults segment of this section.
